APRIL SESSION 2013 RACANATI SERGIO

RACANATI SERGIO

BIOGRAFIA
e ri-attivazione dello spazio pubblico.
Andrea Lissoni, Lewis Biggs, Julia Draganovic. Durante la residenza
vengono affrontati temi relativi alla rigenerazione e riqualificazione dello
spazio pubblico attraverso nuove pratiche artistiche soffermandosi sui
Giannone, Gabriella Ruta.
Paola Spinelli, "SEDUZIR_SEDURRE UNA DONNA CHE SEDUCE GLI
nelle fondamenta di una condominio, tenutasi nel 2010;
Lambretto a Milano.
all'interno del programma "Pre-Occupied"; "SEEK REFUGE.

APRIL SESSION 2013 ALICE ROSATI

ALICE ROSATI

ALICE ROSATI
      Milan
Lives and works in Paris.

BIOGRAPHY
Alice Rosati: born in 1985 , artist and self taught photographer.
At age of four Alice Rosati received her first camera, a cute little Ninja Turtles exemplar, but it wasn’t until 2008 when she made a living out of fashion photography. She began her introduction to visual culture in her father's advertising agency and graduated from college with a degree in Art history, exibiting her own photographic art works in various galleries and museums .
Her career did certainly took a roaring kick start as we’ve seen her work being featured in Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Anothermagazine, Jalouse, Wonderland amongst others.
official website : www.alicerosati.com

CRITICS
Alice Rosati
Self-taught artist, she forms her artistic personality in her father’s photo studio, where she absorbs the cromatic and aesthetitc sense, that will be, toghether with the study of the artist’s egotism , the main part of her research.
The suburbs of Milan where she has grown up instead of depressing her, push her  to overcome the limits of their cultural sleepiness.
Visual paradoxes, art as exorcism, study of the unconscious, and irony are expressed with ambivalent images, through painting, photography , sculpture or installations.
Alice‘s polyhedric artistic research proposes us a dialectical vision of the absurdity of reality, pushing the observer to ask himself which is the real world that surround him.
Alice wants to debunk with irony contemporary art , fixed and recognised in her  conceptual anarchy, with an absolute mastery of tools and ways to express her transfigurations.
Every veil of hypocrysis falls down when she portrais her muses,  but it’s particularly in her self-shots that she contestualizes her thoughts and her visions, entering in a dimension where the known and the unknown have no more boundaries.
She’ s a storyteller, building up fake universes where her characters can play roles.
Her landscapes are consequential to the portraits, with metaphisically dreamlike images Alice let us enter in her magic and ambiguous world giving us the sensation to travel in an hidden reality exploring the personal diary of the artist and his neverending tale.

STATEMENT
THEY ARE COMING
“They are Coming” is the photographic project I m submitting to the collectors who wll be visting NYBA.
All shot in analogic film with a MAMYIA C-330 ( the square format) and a CANNONET QL-19L.
It’ s a project  I am carrying on since a couple of years, as the increasily fear for the end of the world is taking over people’ s minds.
Aliens, Maya prophecy, Nibiru, Chem Trails, 21-12-2012 end of the world… we are listening speaking about that more and more often, and I started to dream every night apocalyptic sceneries where I am fighting against aliens in a postnuclear world.
This project is comprehensive of many series.
I extracted 1to 4 pictures from each one to give you an idea of the general vibe.
All the prints normally are very wide c-prints
From 1mx1m to 2mx 3m,
The project is shot partly in Buenos Aires-  Argentina and partly in Lanzarote  Island and in Paris.
The MOTHERSHIP SERIES portrays the alien spaceship landing on earth.
The AEREAL SERIES , is mostly about shades of colours , the picture were taken  during a transcontinenal flyght at 12000 feet high.
The ATTACK SERIES is all about war planes flying over the city of paris. ( a real sign that war has started)
The DESOLATION SERIES is about a survivor,  a man walking alone in a postatomic world, where we see also a very far golden obsevatory standing in a burned land, the last outpost of an endangered society.
The BLOB SERIES portrays some alien eggs left to hatch alongside a river.

Artist and independent curator, Honored Artist of Azerbaijan Republic, member of Azerbaijan Artists Union, member of CIMAM. Received a Bachelor Degree in Monumental Art Faculty from V.Mukhina Institute of Arts, in St.Petersburg, Russia in 1983 and Master’s Degree in Painting from Azerbaijan State University of Arts and Culture in 1988.

Being well known with her early modernistic paintings, in the 90s she transitioned to conceptual contemporary art. She started to explore multimedia practices, where she uses her cross cultural background to create art works, including complex relationships between culture, politics and identity. Dealing indirectly with political issues, she balances aesthetics and concept with work that often verges towards the poetic. She is focusing on video installations and photo documentaries.
Shikhlinskaya has exhibited in large number exhibitions, among them 30th Council of Europe exhibition “Art in Europe since 1945” in German Historical Museum (Berlin 2012), Documenta13 in Pavilion of Critical Art Ensemble (Kassel 2012), “The Journey to the East” in Galleria Arsenal (Bialystok 2011) and in MOCAK (Krakow 2011), "PROXIMITY" in Docks on Seine (Paris 2011), Centre of Contemporary Art, Uyazdovski Castle (Warsaw 2009), 1st Tbilisi International Contemporary Art Event “Artisterium (2008). In the more than 50 exhibitions and projects curated by Shikhlinskaya, the social subject is also of high priority; often she explores actual problems of relationship between individual and society. Her project “USSR-remix” were presented in (Vienna 2012), (Tbilisi 2009) and exhibited in Center of Contemporary Art (Baku 2008, 2010), “Transkaukasia festival” Italian Passage (Warsaw 2010),Tou Scene Art Centre (Stavanger 2010). Shikhlinskaya has curated “Maiden Tower - To be a Woman” International Forum of Contemporary Art (Baku 2009). She continued gender subject in international video art exhibition “Openly” in Antrepo, Sanat Limani in the frames of “Istanbul- Capital of Culture of Europe” (2010).  She curated Azerbaijan’s 1st Pavilion at the 52nd Venice Biennale of Art (2007), group show “Steps of Time” Modern and Contemporary Art from Azerbaijan in Dresden Museum of Art(2008). Shikhlinskaya has initiated  series of Land Art projects in Azerbaijan and regions with “Labyrinth ” group and international participants (1999-2005).

PROJECT
The "doomsday" predicted on a calendar of Indians of the Maya, decline of one civilization, origin of the new one… It is only improbable hypothesis on possible events in the future. The modern mankind hasn't enough knowledge to prevent the apocalyptic scenario, but it's enough to muse on what we are ready to transfer to the future generations. The answer is: only that we create in the present and that we will keep from heritage of the past.  But, if we create while destroying, if we build while destroying, whether we break off link of times – whether we approach thereby the ending so "terrifying" us?  Whether we are its direct producers?
The economic recovery of the last years and the construction boom which has followed it, led to significant changes in the shape of modern Baku. Along with emergence of a set of grandiose architectural projects and the most modern infrastructure of roads and bridges, historical buildings and architecture monuments irrevocably disappear. At the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, in the period of the first oil boom, the Azerbaijani oil tycoons and patrons began to invite the European architects to turn Baku into one of the most beautiful cities in the Caucasus. Exteriors and interiors of buildings were decorated by families' monograms, sculptures of Atlases, the zoomorfny relief, the forged openwork balustrades and balconies… Those houses which over time have become historical and architectural monuments, were inseparable from the shape of Baku  developed over the years. This shape's uniqueness is in historical connection of cultures of the East and the West, in the layers of history which are tracing in architectural appearance of the city, created throughout centuries. According to the general plan of reorganization of the city, a lot of these houses, as well as other architectural monuments, are ruthlessly destroyed… Instead of them the modern buildings arise – the buildings from concrete and glass, comfortable, multistoried and "faceless"…

Statement

Liquidity, fluidity, development, process, evolution, and movement - all lie at the heart of my work.

I think to “End and Over” as a possible step towards a consciousness change: the passage from a physical to a feeling system both from the macrocosmic point of view (universe/solar system) and microcosmic (cell/atom).
I construct therefore a harmonic system where everything, which follows physical laws, is connection and meeting amongst beings.
A harmonic system where every element (every sphere) becomes energies’ fusion and meeting between creatures, where every element lives in a strong hug and dance around a centre.

Project

                                                              Write-up

Ice as a medium in the work has a varied implication. It serves as a base that supports many different ways of execution i.e. carving, moulding, drilling drawing and many more. But the inherent nature of change is always central to the medium. It holds the marks may it be the techniques mentioned above for a given moment of time but not for prolonged passage of time (unless preserved by maintaining environmental factors). This fleeting and ephemeral nature of the medium destabilises the notion of permanence. The dynamics of change is immensely important and applied to the span of existence in any material or organism. As the famous saying by Heraclitus “you cannot step twice into the same stream” echoes the ever-changing world. Some changes are drastic and violent where some are subtle and slow.  Ice in my work underscores the change that is the only potent and permanent phenomenon in the world.
In my work H2O(S) which starts from a solid block of ice; puncturing hole with drilling machines, later filling colour in the holes and let it spread on its own accord. For the climate of India ice is not a natural state of water and for the reason allows disintegration to a more stable form (liquid) in a span of time. As the ice disintegrates it slowly allows colour to permeate into the block of ice, giving slow spreading effect within the block. In the end completely transformed to liquid with the colour mixed all throughout the work.
With the conception of the work a significant term Metastability plays a vital role. As the term suggests for a stable state of substance provided it is subjected to no more than small disturbances, seem paradoxical. It shows the unchanging nature of a material due to the fact that it is not worked upon by external factors. But as a matter of fact instability is inherent to everything. The work show this state of metastability when there is a silence without any changes, a state of stability of the block of ice in the space and time, unless it is worked upon with driller and ink. And again enters a state of stability when the ices ice completely transform to liquid water mixed with colour.
Applied to wider phenomenon may illustrates this transformation. A secluded indigenous culture for instance can be taken as a stable state of a system.  With equilibrium within, the nature, environment and untouched by other cultures. The state remains stable unless an interference of external agent induces change on the culture in the form of ideas. Injecting new ideas and hopes for a better future. These ideas can be numerous for example technology, development, modernisation or globalisation. Some times these dispersion of ideas are subtle and sometimes violent. The assimilation of the ideas takes time to penetrate the society. Breaking the substratum of the indigenous culture, knowledge and way of life slowly transforming it into a new culture, knowledge and way of life.
The process of change is accentuated in my work showing the transforming nature of being in a society. Transformation and change is always considered as a positive state of survival. It leads to difference and complexity, which is necessary for any society to sustain in a longer run. The work celebrates transformation and changes and glorifies the difference before and after it.

                                                  About My Work

Whether or not, from the dawn of human civilization art has been made with several intentions, but the purpose remain same, to delight the senses of onlooker. My work is the intimate dialogue between my total being and the visual agents which constitute the medium. I have always tried to realize visual and emotional force simultaneously by treating the medium in a way where the viewer becomes a constituent part of the work in an undeviating way. I work “towards” something rather than “from”˗˗˗to transcend the creative process. This process enables me to create myriad visuals within a visual and the changing visual formation creates an illusion which compels the onlooker to participate not as an outsider but to involve with the ongoing process.
The natural tendency of both the mediums; the disintegration of ice and the disseminative quality of smell, the emergence and the divergence and the celebration with natural world explores the fleeting and ephemeral, notions of being and time and  vice-versa. In ice work, my intention is to provide full autonomy to the viewer to see the changing visuality within one visual. “Passion and Desire” has a long history. The “apple” which popularly symbolizes passion and desire, is taken in to consideration in my work titled “Impression”. The attempt is to show the signifying marks codified by culture that remain within the framework of subjective experience, dependent upon the unique way in which each of us mobilize in the contemporary rootless and materialistic era. This attitude of work seems particularly relevant in a world increasingly dominated by purely rational thought and money-motivated action.
The terms “absence” and “presence” are dependent upon the notion of being. Being is not inexplicable or transcendent, but exists within a framework or state. The work titled “Presence of Absence” is an attempt to explore the idea of metaphysics of presence by removing things from the studio subsequently and documenting it after each removal. Then, I placed painted white clips on the wall and floor in order suggest a trace of the history of the space. As it is said that no space is empty, I tried to suggest an “uncannyness” by removing the whole stuff leaving some traces behind.
“Smell Chamber” is the developed representation of the ice work, where my aim is to condense the visual dimension and create an atmosphere of realization to make a viewer “to conceive” rather than “to perceive” the work. The works consist of three chambers, two filled with coffee and chloroform and the middle one is empty. The intention here is to “draw in one’s head”, i.e.to make the onlooker to evoke his/her own momentary conception of being and time. By this process, my aim is to make a viewer to recall his “psychobiographical” experiences of the smell by sensing. The process will take place effortlessly and the viewer’s memory will become a “pscychogeograpy” of the work where innumerable visual formation will take place, and at this juncture the motto is to subvert the notion of art of being merely “visual”, I intend to create “psychovisual” art.
